Intro

Hey I'm Katie, a bicycle riding cold brew lover, obsessed with my puppy Oliver and container gardening; ask me how my tomatillos are doing. 😍 My body is currently in Omaha, Nebraska, but my soul lives in SoCal. I ventured into UX through a career of taking care of people and a life of creative expression. My most recent hobbies are paper craft and improv comedy.

I studied Hospitality Management in college and went on to have very fun and interesting jobs in hotels, restaurants, tourism, and event management. I apply skills I developed in that career in my design process through thoughtful user research, tight collaboration with PMs and engineers, and the attitude that every task can be my task. I've never said "that's not my job" and I'm always down to go first.

My design process is informed by the double-diamond (say what you want, it's a framework and it keeps me organized) and executed through attentive listening, working from and contributing to a design system, and building the bridge between between user and business needs.

The little details that matter a lot

The little details that matter a lot

Design touch-points. What makes my team not only fun, but high-performing is that I'm not afraid to show my work. I bring my team into the process with Loom videos, weekly design reviews, and presenting in design chapter meetings.

Thoughtful honesty. It’s important that my team feels comfortable talking about ideas, can discuss opportunities to improve freely, and with care. It was very cool to be invited back to celebrate my previous team's launch this year because we had established a strong partnership working on a tough project!

Continuous learning. I love to tinker and find ways to incorporate what I’m learning into my work. I bring my improv practice into user interviews, am contributing a paper craft illustrated page to our company's children's book, and took a JavaScript class last year to continue my pursuit of becoming a unicorn one day.

Past Lives

Past Lives

Event management. 6 years coordinating non-profit and for-profit cycling events in California.

Bicycle tourist. 3 years pedaling up the east coast of Australia, through the South Island of New Zealand, and cruising the cobblestones of Europe while working in hospitality along the way.

Roller Derby Queen. I rolled for two seasons each with the Sioux City Roller Dames and Tragic City Rollers, awarded MVP Jammer twice!

Au Pair. I got my first taste of international travel when I nannied for 2 Dutch children in the Netherlands. It's where I learned to love my bike, languages, and potatoes with mayonnaise.
